Jason Sytsma grew up in Bellingham and attended Squalicum HS. He earned his P-12 PE/Health credential from WWU and his Master’s in Technology: Curriculum and Instruction. He began working in Bellingham Public Schools in 2006 as an instructional assistant for students with autism at Silver Beach. He then served as a PE teacher and Athletic Director at St. Paul’s Academy in Bellingham for 7 years. In 2014 he accepted a PE/Health position at Islander Middle School in Mercer Island. He has coached track, basketball, football, and cross country. His deep connetion to health and building strong, authentic relationships with students were the leading factors that led to his recommendation for hire at Kulshan.
Carrie Turner began her career with kids by serving as a wilderness counselor in CA, a service corps member in Belize, and a river guide on the Klamath River. She completed her degree in Physical Education and Health at Western Washington University. She has been a Special Olympics, soccer and track coach in Bellingham and a student teacher at Whatcom Middle School. After student teacher she taught outdoor education for Dragonfly Ltd. in Hong Kong, China. Her objective is to engage students in meaningful thought, conversation, and action that will have a positive long-term effect on their physical, mental, social, and emotional health.
